The company has responded to that demand and has even innovated on the performance front, with things like graphics hardware acceleration for many browser functions, touch input, and using multiple CPU cores to do things like compile JavaScript. It seems Microsoft has gotten the message that the world wants a Web browser that's fast and compliant with new standards. Those may seem like small numbers, but you need to realize that each percentage point of worldwide browser use translates to over 20 million users. So it makes good sense to bring the company's latest and greatest browser version to the most-used desktop OS on the planet.Īfter years of losing ground to the likes of Google's Chrome and Mozilla's Firefox, IE is staging a small comeback of late, having gained 4 percentage points in the past year, while Chrome has lost 3 points and Firefox 1.3 percent. But Windows 7 still dwarfs new OS in terms of user number, with recent Net Applications numbers showing a commanding 46 percent market share ahead of XP's 31 percent and Windows 8 and 8.1's 9.25 percent. Internet Explorer 11 not only serves as the default browser, but also powers some of the new-style apps in Windows 8.1. Microsoft's desktop software efforts are laser-focused on the new Windows- Windows 8.1-and an integral part of that new operating system is its browser.
